Basel moments 2022
This series of images comes from the Swiss summer of 2022. They are self-conscious in their composition and subject matter and are perhaps achingly cliche in choice and framing. Busy market stalls in front of the town hall (Basler Rathaus), swimmers floating down the Rhine on a sweltering day, a dark city horizon against a glowing dusk sky, and a distant mountain chalet viewed through the fog. Yet, each has its own story and are a sincere exploration of the medium. The outcomes, and the accidents, are unknown until development many months later. This makes each exposure a pleasing experiment with time, light and space.
This work was created while Lachlan was performing with the Manly Warringah Pipe Band in the Basel Tattoo concert, Switzerland. The series is also accompanied by ink and pencil sketches made in situ. Some of these sketches can be found on the artist’s Instagram account.
